He suggested that he and the students pretend a different, fictional professor would be giving the talk. They made up a boring title and speaker name for posters promoting the event around campus. As Feynman had hoped, the lack of his famous name filtered out the casual attendees. Only students genuinely interested in physics showed up to hear the unknown “Professor Henry Warren” talk about proton structure. After Feynman gave his technical lecture to this engaged student audience, the faculty adviser learned of the ruse. He was upset that he hadn't been included in the joke, and said that more people would have attended if Feynman's name had been used. But attracting large general audiences was exactly what Feynman wanted to avoid! He preferred intimate groups of students who were excited about physics minutiae.
