The questions of how sweet or tart it should be, what ingredients are on hand, and how your recipe can cater to varying tastes all influence how you strategize and optimize your business. Even a business as simple as a lemonade stand isn’t so simple. You need to balance resources, consumer desires and supply chain constraints to deliver the best possible outcome.


But what about when our desire for optimization meets the modern world’s technological advances?


When you place an order on Amazon, conduct a quick Google search, or sift through movie titles on Netflix, a complex web of algorithms and mathematical models springs into action behind the scenes, working to provide the best suggestions. This relentless drive toward perfection, stemming from the promise of optimization, is condensed into such daily activities. That’s how you’ve been getting your same-day deliveries, search results that make sense, and movie recommendations that you’re most likely to enjoy.


It’s clear, then, that optimization promises improved efficiency and productivity by refining processes and maximizing outcomes within set constraints. Its strengths go beyond production efficiency in industry; optimization allows us to accomplish tasks more swiftly, utilize resources to their potential, and improve product and service quality by leaps and bounds.


What’s more, we can now access the right tools to tackle previously insurmountable bottlenecks and predict the potential consequences of our choices, enough to avoid more problems and make better decisions.


Consider the circulatory system of global commerce: Trucks, airplanes, conveyor belts, and bubble wrap deliver on business promises to consumers. Behind this intricate system lie powerful equations and codes driven by precise mathematical models, all striving for excellence.

How our quest for perfection took off


In the vast expanse of a sun-drenched desert near Los Angeles, you’ll find a striking spectacle: rows of Air New Zealand’s 777 jets standing untouched by the usual bustle of airports. These modern aviation marvels are emblematic of a broader trend in human history: our relentless drive for optimization. The 777, a masterstroke of engineering, epitomizes the culmination of centuries of progress. It’s a product of our drive to understand the world and reshape it to better serve our needs. Of course, the journey toward perfection isn’t limited to aviation; it reflects broader cultural shifts that have defined modern Western thought across industries and societal segments. Our obsession with optimization is founded on a radical three-part approach to problem-solving: atomization, abstraction and automation.


Atomization refers to a process where we dissect the complexities of our surroundings into smaller, more understandable units. Like assembling intricate Lego sets, we learned to build our world piece by piece with every scientific milestone, laying the groundwork for more ambitious projects. As humanity evolves, we’ve learned to leverage important ideas across physical components, systems, and processes.


Then came the abstraction era. Instead of only grappling with the tangible, we devised models, simulations, and theoretical constructs. Beyond complex numbers like GDP growth or profit margins, we need to focus on the heart of true progress: Community well-being, the planet’s health, and personal fulfillment. This renewed perspective champions life over mere living, heralding a society where genuine connections and shared values eclipse the allure of unchecked, destructive consumerism.


Moving forward from this point isn’t about rejecting optimization but redefining it. It’s about merging individual initiative with collective responsibility, combining the expansive vision of the mainland with the close-knit intricacies of the island.
